Wii Game Night

Please join us at the library for a fun game night for teens on November 3 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Attendees can take turns playing a variety of games on the library’s Nintendo WII gaming console. Games will include Wii Sports, MarioKart, Mario Super Smash Brothers, and Wii Music. No registration or prior experience necessary; sign up for game-playing turns will be the night of the event on a first-come, first-served basis. The City of Ember

The teen book group is reading “The City of Ember” for November. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic underground world where resources are running out. The city of Ember, "the only light in the dark world," began as a survival experiment created by the "Builders" who wanted their children to "grow up with no knowledge of a world outside, so that they feel no sorrow for what they have lost." An opening prologue describes the Builders' intentions-that Ember's citizens leave the city after 220 years. They tuck "The Instructions" to a way out within a locked box programmed to open at the right time. But the box has gone astray. The book discussion will be on November 7th at 1:30 pm, and will watch the film on a later date to be determined. Pick up your copy at the library!

Halloween festivities

Want to try out some creative ways to dress up a trick-or-treat bag? Or would you rather decorate a pumpkin? Either way, we have some fun things in store on October 20th from 6-8 pm. The library will be hosting a “decorate a pumpkin OR dress up a trick-or-treat bag.” We’ll have those activities, new books on display, a spooky movie to watch, and light refreshments. The Wednesday Wars

Have you ever felt like you don't fit in? "The Wednesday Wars" by Gary Schmidt might appeal to you if you have! On Wednesday afternoons, while his Catholic and Jewish schoolmates attend religious instruction, Holling Hoodhood, the only Presbyterian in his seventh grade, is alone in the classroom with his teacher, Mrs. Baker, who Holling is convinced hates his guts. He feels more certain after Mrs. Baker assigns Shakespeare's plays for Holling to discuss during their shared afternoons. This is a great read you won't want to miss! The book group will meet on October 10th at 1:30 PM - light refreshments and snacks will be served. Join in the fun.

Chasing Vermeer

Looking for a good mystery? This month’s book for our teen book group is a thriller! Blue Balliett’s Chasing Vermeer is about how seemingly unrelated events connect to reveal a large art scandal involving a missing Vermeer painting. As they rush to solve the puzzle (and decipher clues that have left federal agents baffled), no one is spared from being considered a suspect. Pick up a book at the circulation desk, and join us for the book discussion on September 12th at 1:30 PM in the Washburn Room. Next month's book will be Wednesday Wars by Gary Schmidt.

Book Group

This month, our teen book group will be reading The Misadventures of Maude March, by Audrey Couloumbis. Winner of a Newbery Honor, this is the first in a series of books. Sallie and her sister live with their Aunt Ruthie since their parents died, and when the weasely Reverend Peasley proposes to Maude, they sneak out to Missouri in hopes of finding other family. They disguise themselves as boys and get into all sorts of trouble - including getting involved with the man that murdered their aunt! Open Mic Night

Basloe Library will be hosting an Open Mic Night for teens on Wednesday August 19, 2009 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM as part of “Express yourself at your library” during this summer’s reading program. Individuals and groups can share poetry, dance, music, and comedy – whatever it is you do! Light refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Twilight movie

Are you a fan of the Twilight series? Maybe even just wondering what the hype is all about? The Library is hosting a Twilight movie showing on Saturday April 4, 2009 at 3 p.m. Good food and a good movie-how could you resist?? Come join the party!

Eclipse!

Are you a fan of Twilight? Want to discuss the ins and outs of dating a vampire? A werewolf? Enjoy books with bite? The Library's Twilight Book Group meets on Wednesday March 17th to discuss Eclipse at 3:30 p.m. in the Washburn Room. Come join in on the fun!

Edward and Alice playing chess was one of the funniest things I’d ever seen. They’d sat there nearly motionless, staring at the board, while Alice foresaw the moves he would make and he picked the moves she would make in return out of her head.
